Taming Fat
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper discussing some of the discoveries associating obesity with genetic predisposition. Obesity is approaching “epidemic” levels in the United States, and along with its increase also are rises in incidence of diabetes. Diabetes’ high blood sugar damages organs, including the heart, kidneys and eyes. Diabetes is in itself a risk factor for heart disease, and we have known for years that high serum cholesterol (i.e., fat) constitutes a separate risk factor for heart disease as well. The purpose here is to trace fat’s progress and examine some of the factors resulting in some people being lean, others becoming obese while practicing very similar dietary habits. The Atkins Diet: Protein, Carbohydrates And Calories
[ send me this paper ]
21 pages in length. Contemporary diets reflect the
significant pressures that are placed upon those who are both impressionable and vulnerable. With the primary influence being that of popular culture, overweight individuals are faced with difficult choices when it comes to proper food choices and weight loss programs. In order to maintain a sense of acceptance, people often forego the necessary elements of a proper and healthful diet in exchange for one full of simple sugars, worthless carbohydrates and empty calories. When protein is allowed into the diet, it is typically in the form of a fast food hamburger or other kind of inadequate source. Educating overweight individuals about the importance of proper nutrition is a difficult task, particularly in light of such purported healthful and safe weight loss programs such as the Atkins diet. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

The Benefits of Exercise and Other Factors in the Prevention of Heart Disease
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper with tutorial language inserted discussing the benefits of exercise and other factors in the prevention of heart disease. Heart disease in the United States is responsible for the death of five times as many women than is breast cancer yet many women are not aware of this fact. In addition, over four million Americans have congestive heart failure that costs the health care system over $10 billion annually. Regardless of the high risks of heart disease and failure which are reported, researchers have found that exercise and other preventative methods can reduce the risk of heart disease by 50 percent and exercise applied to those who have experienced congestive heart failure also helps in improving the overall functionality of the patient. Overall, researchers have found that exercise combined with quitting smoking, reducing cholesterol levels, loss of weight in those who are overweight and for women, the addition of hormone replacement therapy during and after menopause, are all the best preventative measures at lowering the risk of heart disease.

The Effects of Childhood Obesity
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page paper discussing the causes and effects of childhood obesity. The incidence of obesity in the United States has more than doubled in the last thirty years and currently affects 25% of children and 33% of adults. Childhood obesity is a growing concern due to the risks associated with obesity which include serious health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallbladder disease, stress on weight bearing joints, sleep disorders, respiratory dysfunction and increased risk to certain cancers among others. The incidence of Type II diabetes has been increasing in children believed to be a direct result of the increase in overweight and obese children. In addition to the obvious health risks, obese children are also more susceptible to social and psychological problems which may result in isolation from peer groups and low self-esteem based on society’s preference for thinness. Altering this increasing incidence of childhood may be difficult however as not only do hereditary factors play a part but perhaps more importantly so do behavioral and environmental factors. A great deal of responsibility has been placed on the family environment in changing this trend of increased non-physical activities such as watching television and playing on computers which have led to the decrease in overall physical activity levels in children. Additional societal influences are the promotion of foods with high fat and sugar content in television ads and the promotion of large portions in restaurants; a combination of elements which are difficult for children to overcome.

The Effects of Exercise in Middle Aged Women: Literature Review & Possible Study Outline

It would seem that in all cases, middle aged women have shown improvements in regards to overall health from exercise in addition to reducing their risk for heart disease by reducing lipid concentrations, cholesterol levels and blood pressure among other variables. While some studies involves thousands of subjects over many years, most studies involve a relatively small number of subjects, randomly assigned to controlled short-term exercise programs after which the results are compared from pre- and post-measurements.

The Physiological, Psychological And Environmental Factors Influencing Weight Management
[ send me this paper ]
11 pages in length. With two-thirds of the American adult population overweight and just over thirty percent of them considered obese, there is no question as to the critical nature of weight management in the United States today. The influencing factors - which are mildly persuasive for some and wholly overwhelming for others – run the gamut from a thin-crazed culture to nutritionally-void fast food to an altogether uneducated society when it comes to eating a healthy diet. People have reached the point of being utterly confused and frustrated when it comes to making informed nutritional decisions, given the fact that they have been spoon-fed conflicting – albeit well-meaning – advice from myriad sources that keeps them in a perpetual state of obesity. Far too many people never gain the upper hand on their weight problem, with about 300,000 ultimately succumbing to the fatal aspects of unhealthy dietary habits and physical inactivity inherent to obesity.
